Emma’s Story | The Beginning of Goodbye

Emma’s Story | The Beginning of Goodbye

Emma’s Story is a collection of reflections that explore the memories, emotions, and moments that shaped Emma long before—and beyond—the events of Unfinished Melody. In this reflection, Emma looks back on one childhood conversation that quietly changed the way she viewed love, family and goodbyes.

The Beginning of Goodbye

I remember the day my mom told me the dinners at the McGuires’ were stopping.
She came to me. It was February 1988.
Just after Valentine’s Day.
Josh had given me a charm bracelet, a single red rose and a box of chocolates.
I gave him a box of chocolates and a card.
So when mom came to me, I was devastated when she told me.
I asked her why and she said that all the moms of the band were going on the tour with them because they were all so young.
I believed her.
Josh was the youngest, so it made sense at least for Mrs. McGuire to go.
I cried that night.

A Second Family

I would not just miss Josh.
I would miss Mrs. McGuire.
I would miss Josh’s sisters.
His brother.
His dad.
I grew close to Mrs. McGuire because she babysat me and Mitchell and at one point Molly too.
She kept us from the time my dad left until we were old enough to stay home by ourselves.
Molly had a lot of after-school activities, theater and music and she was 4 years older than me, so she wasn’t able to watch after us that much.
I loved staying there.
I loved helping her in the kitchen.
She treated me like one of her own.
And then of course, there was Josh.
I think at age two was when I started staying there along with Mitchell.
They were the same age, so it wasn’t until around age eight and ten that we started really taking notice of each other.
I always thought he was cute even before that.
And he seemed to think I was too.
Mitchell would sometimes get jealous when Josh would want to sit beside me at the table instead of him.
They were best friends.
At age ten for me, and twelve for Josh was when we started holding hands and being sort of affectionate toward each other.
There are so many memories of birthday parties, cookouts, family dinners, and vacations together.
I am thankful I still have all the pictures.

Looking Back

By fall of 1988, mom and Mitchell were getting ready to go to what she said was church service. They were dressed up so I believed them.
The part that was weird was that it was at night.
We always attended church in the morning. Usually, ten or eleven o’clock.
I thought it was weird, but mom insisted that it was something the church had recently started up.
It was also weird that she didn’t ask me to go.
When church was involved, we had to go. It was a non-negotiable.
I didn’t think a whole lot about it for a while.
Not that I didn’t want to go, necessarily, I just was glad that I didn’t have to go twice a day.
Sometimes I would go to church with Olivia.
I enjoyed that.
I enjoyed her church almost better than the church we attended so I started asking if I could go to church every Sunday with Olivia.
Mom thought that was a great idea.
She was almost too energetic about the idea.
So, every Saturday night I would spend the night with Olivia and go to church the next morning.
Then in late 1989 when I started dating Adam, I started going to his church.
All the while, mom and Mitchell were going to church twice every Sunday.
Mom was happy that I was going to church with Adam.
Again, almost too happy.
I remember thinking it was really weird.
One night, I saw them dressed a little more casual for church than normal and I asked them where they were going and she said, ā€œchurch, of course.ā€
ā€œWearing that?ā€ I had asked.
She said that church was much more casual these days.
I believed her.
But also a part of me had become suspicious.
By then, those evening church services were every other Sunday. Not every Sunday.
That was also when the dress code had changed.
Eventually the evening church services were cut down to once a month.
I saw Josh once in a while when he would come home on tour breaks.
Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even Valentine’s Day.
I saw him for the last time at Olivia’s birthday in July of 1989 prior to me dating Adam.
Every time I saw him, it was always so good.
But there was something I noticed.
He was changing.
Not just in the growing-up sense.
At the time, I thought fame was changing him.
Looking back, I think I was seeing what happens when two people who were once inseparable suddenly have very different lives.
I had been afraid the distance would change us.
I got one last kiss at Olivia’s birthday party.
I hoped he would call or write to me, but I never got a call or a letter in the mail.
He got swept into the fame and we were no more.
I was devastated once again when I realized this.
Accepted it.
Then in December of 1989, Adam came into the picture.
I figured since Josh had not reached out to me by phone or letter, I would just move on.
Obviously, he had.
Adam wasn’t a rebound guy though.
He was the one who made my heart beat again.
He was there for four years.
College scholarship for basketball across the country at Pepperdine College.
We tried to make it work after he left for college, but it was too hard.
The distance was too much.
I was starting to get a complex.
It made me not want to love anyone because everyone I seemed to love would eventually leave.
My dad.
Josh.
The rest of the McGuires.
And then Adam, even if leaving wasn’t what either of us wanted.

A 1989 First Love Diary Entry Inspired by a Song That Changed Everything

A 1989 First Love Diary Entry Inspired by a Song That Changed Everything

This 1989 first love diary entry takes us back to a moment when a song, a feeling, and everything in between collided.

Sometimes a song doesn’t just play in the background…
it becomes part of a memory.

March 23, 1989

Dear Diary,

Today was the BEST day.

Mom took me to Strawberries Records & Tapes after school. I had been waiting for Madonna’s Like a Prayer album to come out, and it finally did.

I had saved enough money to get the tape, my favorite Bop magazine, and a Sweet Valley High book. I begged Mom to take me as soon as I got home from school.

She did.

As soon as we got back, I opened the cassette and put it into my jambox.

I glanced around at the posters on my wall—Madonna, a few of my favorites from Bop magazine, and even some Block 213 ones—making sure they were all ready for the best concert ever

As I suspected, I loved every single song on the album. I’ve already started learning all the words.

But one song caught me in a way I didn’t expect.

Cherish.

It’s such a happy, upbeat song, and for some reason… it made me think of Josh.

Josh is in town. I haven’t seen him yet, though.

I don’t even know if I will.

Today I was in my room singing along to Cherish like I always do, using my hairbrush as a microphone and pretending the posters on my wall were my audience as usual.

I didn’t even think about who might be outside my door.

I had my door shut.

At least… I thought I did.

At some point, I noticed it was cracked open, and I have no idea when that happened.

After the song ended, I walked over and peeked out into the hallway.

I heard voices coming from Mitchell’s room.

One of them sounded like Josh.

What if he heard me singing?

Oh my gosh. I would be so embarrassed.

Then Mitchell’s door opened.

And there he was.

Josh.

He smiled at me.

Then he walked over, hugged me, and kissed my cheek.

ā€œHey, Emma,ā€ he said.

I could feel my cheeks getting hot.

He’s done that before…

But this time, it felt different.

I can’t really explain it.

But I was glad he did it.

Mitchell just rolled his eyes and told me to turn the music down a notch.

Uh oh.

Did that mean they heard me?

Josh smiled a little and said, ā€œIt’s good to see you, Emma.ā€

Then he followed Mitchell down the hallway.

I watched him walk away.

I don’t know why, but something felt different about him.

Not bad… just different.

But I was still really happy he hugged me.

And kissed my cheek.

And I couldn’t stop thinking about it after.

Emma’s Diary: Some Songs Never Leave You

Emma’s Diary: Some Songs Never Leave You

A quiet night in 1996.
A date that should have felt exciting.
And a song that brought old memories rushing back.

Dear Diary,

After work tonight, I went out on a date with a guy I met a couple of weeks ago.

He was nice enough.
He seemed to like me.
And I liked him.

I even agreed to another date.

But when the night ended, I realized I didn’t feel excited the way I thought I would.

Maybe that’s part of the problem.

Daniel has been gone for over a year now.
Adam for two.
And Josh…

Well… many years.

Sometimes love feels too good to be true.
And other times it feels like I’m just going through the motions, hoping eventually I’ll feel something more.

I don’t know.

Does true love just not exist for me?

Everyone I seem to love leaves.

Why can’t I hold on to anyone?

Why did tonight feel so ordinary when I wanted so badly for it not to?

After I got home, this song came on the radio while I was getting ready for bed.

ā€œI Love You Always Foreverā€ by Donna Lewis.

It’s still fairly new, but I know I’ve heard it at work once or twice before.

Tonight was different though.

The second it started playing, I stopped in my tracks.

I sat there staring at the floor while the song filled my bedroom, and somehow all I could see was Josh’s face.

Like no time had passed at all.

I know what you’re probably thinking.

Why does every song somehow lead me back to Josh?

Honestly… I wonder the same thing.

Maybe it’s because music was always such a huge part of our lives.

Molly was always involved in musicals.

Josh was — and still is — in a boyband.

And me?

I’ve always loved music too, even if I can’t sing very well.

I pay attention to lyrics more than anything else.

Music feels like poetry to me.

Beautiful poetry.

Maybe that’s why certain songs still feel like him.

Or maybe some people never completely leave your heart no matter how many years pass.

Some memories don’t fade… they just get quieter.

June 25, 1990

Dear Diary,

Today I cried.

Like… really cried. Not just a little.

And I don’t even know why it hit me like that.

I turned on MTV, and there he was.
Josh.

Blue eyes. That smile. His hair all curly like it used to be.
He looked the same… but also not.

They were interviewing Block 213, and I just kind of froze. I didn’t even change the channel. I couldn’t.

I don’t know why.

I mean… I’m with Adam now. I’m supposed to be over all of that.

But then the interview ended, and a song came on.
If Wishes Came True.

I almost changed it. I really did.

But I didn’t.

And I think that’s when everything just… hit me.

I just sat there listening, and all I could think about was him.
About us.

And then I started crying, and I couldn’t stop.

It’s been almost a year since I’ve seen him. Not really seen him.
The Sunday dinners stopped, and Mom said it was because he’s on tour, but… I don’t know. It feels like more than that.

I miss those dinners.
I miss Mrs. McGuire.
I miss all of them.

I miss him.

And I feel so bad even writing that.

Because Adam is so sweet.
He’s good to me, and he makes me happy.

And I do love him. I really do.

But it’s just… different.

I don’t think I ever stopped loving Josh.
I think I just got used to him not being here.

And now I feel horrible for crying over someone I’m not even supposed to have anymore.

I wish I didn’t feel like this.

But I do.

Anyway, Adam is coming over soon.

I just needed to get this out.

My eyes are probably so puffy.

Hopefully he won’t notice.

…Yeah, right.

He’ll definitely notice.

I should probably find some concealer.

Or something.

I just… don’t want him to ask why I was crying.
