Adam’s Reflection: The Love That Never Left

Adam’s Reflection: The Love That Never Left

Before Emma came back into his life… Adam had already lived through love, loss, and the quiet realization that moving on isn’t always as simple as it seems.

After Emma and I broke up in December of ’93, I didn’t think I would ever love another girl.

Emma was one of a kind. Smart, funny, beautiful… and she liked me for me. That kind of thing sticks with you.

For a while, I didn’t even try. But eventually, life nudges you forward whether you’re ready or not. I started dating again, though it never felt easy. I kept comparing everyone to her, and no one really stood a chance.

My buddy Ryan used to tell me to just keep going on dates—that eventually, I’d find someone.

He wasn’t wrong.

I did find someone. Actually… I found two.

The first was Alisha. That relationship didn’t end well. It taught me a lot about trust, and about paying attention to the things you don’t want to see. Let’s just say… it left its mark.

And then there was Dara.

Dara was different.

In some ways, she reminded me of Emma—blonde hair, blue eyes, that same kind of easy smile that could pull you in without trying. She was driven, and she knew exactly what she wanted out of life.

We met in 2005. I was thirty-two. She was twenty-five.

At the time, I didn’t think much about the age difference. It didn’t feel like it mattered. We got along, we made each other laugh, and for the first time in a long time, things felt… steady.

Comfortable.

Like maybe this was what moving on was supposed to feel like.

I really thought I might marry her.

We talked about it. Not in a rushed way, but in that quiet, natural way where it just seems like the next step.

But somewhere along the way, I realized we weren’t in the same place.

I had already built the life I wanted. I was ready to settle into it, to share it with someone.

Dara was just getting started.

She had goals she hadn’t reached yet, dreams she still needed to chase—and I respected that. I really did.

But respect doesn’t always make things line up.

And in the end… it wasn’t about something going wrong.

It was about something never fully clicking into place.

Maybe I should’ve known from the very beginning.

I remember the day I met Dara.

She was working part-time at a store in the local mall, and I was on my usual UPS route, dropping off packages like I had done a hundred times before.

Nothing about that day should’ve stood out.

But it did.

I walked into the store and saw her right away. She was behind the counter, looking a little unsure of herself, like she was still figuring things out.

Later, I’d find out it was her first day.

She looked up at me and smiled.

“Hi.”

There was something about the way she said it—simple, but genuine.

“Hey,” I said, setting the box down on the counter. “I’ve got a delivery. Do you have anything going out today?”

She hesitated for a second, then let out a small laugh. “I’m not sure, actually. It’s my first day.”

Before I could respond, Brooklyn—my cousin—came walking out from the back.

“Hey, Adam,” she said, like she had been expecting me. She probably saw me on the camera. “Looks like you’ve met our newest employee. This is Dara.”

Dara smiled again, a little more confidently this time. “Hi.”

I smiled back, probably more than I needed to.

Brooklyn shook her head slightly and turned back toward the stockroom. “No outgoing packages today,” she called over her shoulder. “But we’ll have some tomorrow.”

Dara nodded. “So… I guess you’ll be back?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I’m on this route all week.”

“Good,” she said, almost without thinking. Then she caught herself and smiled. “I mean… we’ll probably have something ready by then.”

I laughed. “I’ll hold you to that.”

I finished up, gave Brooklyn a quick wave, and headed back out into the mall.

It should’ve ended there. Just another stop on my route.

But as I stepped away, I glanced back.

Dara was still standing behind the counter… watching me.

Brooklyn was saying something to her, probably explaining how things worked, but Dara’s attention wasn’t fully on her.

And I remember thinking—

that wasn’t going to be the last time I walked into that store.

I never forgot about Emma during those years.

I wondered how she was. If she was happy. If she ever thought about me the way I still found myself thinking about her.

I knew she was still in Boston. I was too.

There were a couple of times I thought I saw her—from a distance, across a street, in passing. Just enough to make me stop for a second and wonder if it was really her.

I thought about going over. Saying hi.

But I didn’t.

Some things… you just know better than to disturb.

She had her life.

And I knew where her heart had settled… and it wasn’t with me.

And I told myself that was enough.

Even years later, when I was asked to reach out to her again… I told myself nothing had changed.

That it would just be a conversation. A simple hello.

But if I’m being honest…

the few times I had seen her before that—

that should’ve told me everything I needed to know.

Because no matter how much time had passed…

it never really felt like anything between us had.

I just hadn’t let myself admit it.

First Date After a Breakup | Emma’s Story

First Date After a Breakup | Emma’s Story

romantic candlelit restaurant table with wine, flowers and warm lighting, representing Emma’s first date with Trevor
A night that felt easy… even when I wasn’t sure it should.

I remember the night I met Trevor like it was yesterday.

Not because it was some life-changing, over-the-top moment…

but because of how quietly everything shifted after that.

It started with a girls’ night.

Olivia had dragged me out to Harp + Bard, insisting I needed to stop moping after my breakup with Nick.

I didn’t want to meet anyone.

I wasn’t ready.

I knew exactly where my heart still was… and it wasn’t open for anything new.

And then there he was.

Watching me.

Trevor.

He was charming in a way that didn’t feel forced.

Confident… but not arrogant.

The kind of confidence that made you feel like he already knew how things were going to play out.

I told myself it didn’t matter.

That I wasn’t interested.

That this was just another moment that would pass.

And yet… I gave him my number anyway.

Just one date.

No expectations.

That’s what I told myself.

The next night, he took me to Mamma Maria.

A place I had never been… but instantly understood the moment I walked in.

It felt warm.

Comfortable.

Intimate in a way that made everything else fade into the background.

And Trevor?

He fit into that space like he had always belonged there.

He opened doors.

He brought flowers.

He paid without hesitation.

None of it was new to me…

but something about the way he did it felt just a little more certain.

Like he wasn’t trying to impress me.

Like he already knew he didn’t have to.

The conversation came easily.

Too easily, maybe.

He asked questions that made me think…

not just about what I did, but why I did it.

And when I answered, he listened.

Really listened.

Or at least… it felt that way.

There were small moments that stuck with me.

The way he suggested what we should order—

not telling me…

just guiding me.

The way he paid attention when I mentioned music.

The way he noticed things… and didn’t always say what he was thinking about them.

And then there was the moment I said his name.

Not his.

Josh’s.

I didn’t say why it mattered.

I didn’t explain anything.

But Trevor noticed.

I could tell.

By the end of the night, everything felt… easy.

Comfortable.

The kind of easy that makes you forget all the reasons you told yourself to be careful.

But that didn’t mean the questions went away.

Was it too soon?

I had just ended something that mattered to me.

I wasn’t looking for anything new.

And yet…

there I was.

Saying yes when he asked to see me again.

He kissed me that night.

It wasn’t rushed.

It wasn’t overwhelming.

Just soft.

Intentional.

The kind of kiss that doesn’t take too much…

but still leaves you thinking about it afterward.

When I got home, Olivia called immediately—of course.

She wanted details.

She always does.

And I told her the truth.

I liked him.

But I didn’t know what it meant yet.

Because sometimes…

liking someone isn’t the complicated part.

Timing is.

And that night?

I wasn’t sure if the timing was right.

I just knew that something had started.

And I wasn’t quite ready to understand what it was.

Right Person, Wrong Time?

Right Person, Wrong Time?

Right person wrong time love reflection blog post

Maybe it really was a case of the right person at the wrong time. . .

I used to think finding the right person meant finding them at the right time.

But what happens when you find them first…
and life takes them away?

Do you move on?

Do you try to forget?

Do you convince yourself it wasn’t meant to be…
or that you imagined it to begin with?

I tried all of it.

I told myself that if it were real, it would’ve worked the first time.
That love shouldn’t have to wait.

But life doesn’t always work that way.

Sometimes it pulls people apart…
not because they don’t belong together…

but because the timing just wasn’t right yet.

Maybe some people aren’t meant to be found at the right time…

Maybe they’re meant to be found again.

There were other people after that.

Good people.

People who cared about me in ways that felt real at the time.

And I cared about them too.

In different ways.

In different seasons of my life.

I used to think that meant I was moving on.
That I had let go of what came before.

But now I’m starting to understand something I didn’t before.

Moving on doesn’t always mean letting go.

Sometimes it just means… continuing your story.

Maybe love isn’t about finding the right person at the right time…

Maybe it’s about finding them again when the timing finally makes sense.

Emma’s Playlist – The Story Behind Unfinished Melody

Emma’s Playlist – The Story Behind Unfinished Melody

Emma’s Heart Through Music

The Playlist Behind Unfinished Melody

Emma’s playlist from Unfinished Melody tells the story of her life through music—each song representing love, heartbreak, healing, and finding her way back to herself.

Music has always been a huge part of how I tell Emma’s story.

Some songs didn’t just inspire scenes—they became the emotion behind them. There were moments where I would hear a song and instantly see Emma… what she was feeling, who she was thinking about, and where she was in her life.

This playlist isn’t just a collection of songs.

It’s Emma’s journey.

Her first love.
Her heartbreak.
The love she tried to build with others.
The one that hurt her.
And the one she never truly let go of.

First Love — Josh

🎧Tracks 1–10

Josh was Emma’s first love… but more than that, he was the kind of love that stays with you.

The kind that feels like it was always meant to be there.

Even when they were young, there was something deep and undeniable between them. Something steady. Something real.

Songs in this part of the playlist reflect that innocence and that certainty—the feeling of knowing, even at a young age, that this person matters.

But as strong as that love was, life had other plans.

After Josh — The Ache That Stayed

🎧Tracks 11–31

When Josh left, Emma didn’t just lose him… she lost a part of herself.

This section of the playlist is filled with longing, confusion, and quiet heartbreak. The kind that doesn’t always show on the surface, but never really goes away.

These songs represent the moments where Emma tried to move forward but still found herself thinking about him.

Wondering where he was.
Wondering if he ever thought about her too.

Even when she wasn’t saying his name, she was still feeling him.

Adam — The Love That Almost Worked

🎧Tracks 32–34

Adam came into Emma’s life at a time when she needed something steady.

Something safe.

And he gave her that.

Their relationship was real. It mattered. But there was always something missing—something Emma couldn’t quite explain.

Adam loved her in a way that was consistent and dependable.

But Emma’s heart… had already been shaped by something deeper.

This part of the playlist reflects that quiet realization:

Sometimes love isn’t enough when it’s not the right love.

Nick — The One That Almost Became Forever

🎧Tracks 35–38

Nick was different.

There was a moment in Emma’s life where it almost felt like this could be it. Like maybe this was the path she was meant to take.

This section of the playlist holds that feeling of possibility… mixed with uncertainty.

The “almost.”

The moments where everything looks right on the outside, but something inside doesn’t fully settle.

And eventually, Emma has to face the truth:

Almost isn’t forever.

Trevor — The Love That Took Too Much

🎧Tracks 39–47

Trevor was the kind of love that pulls you in before you realize what it’s costing you.

In the beginning, there was something magnetic about him. Something intense.

But over time, that intensity turned into something else.

Emma found herself trying to be someone she thought he wanted… trying to be enough.

This section of the playlist follows that progression:

The pull.
The dependency.
The loss of self.

And finally…

The moment she takes her power back.

Because even though Trevor changed how she saw herself for a while, he didn’t get to define who she was.

Healing — Finding Herself Again

🎧Tracks 48–53

After everything Emma went through, she had to find her way back to herself.

This part of the playlist is about growth.

Strength.

And learning how to stand on her own again.

Not because she had to…
but because she chose to.

The Love That Never Left — Josh

🎧Tracks 54–64

No matter how much time passed, or how far life took her…

There was always something in Emma that remembered him.

Josh was never just a chapter in her story.

He was the thread that ran through all of it.

Even in the moments she tried to move on, a part of her heart never really did.

And when they found their way back to each other…

It wasn’t something new.

It was something that had been there all along.

Confidence & Lightness — Modern Emma

🎧Tracks 65–70

This part of Emma’s journey feels different.

Lighter.

After everything she’s been through—the heartbreak, the confusion, the love that took too much—this is where she finally starts to come back to herself.

There’s strength here, but not the kind that comes from surviving something painful.
This is the kind that comes from knowing who you are again.

She’s not chasing love anymore.
She’s not trying to prove anything.

She’s just… living.

Laughing. Moving. Letting herself feel good again without questioning it.

These songs reflect a version of Emma who is more confident, more grounded, and finally at peace with everything that brought her here.
