The afternoon flies by in a blur, my fingers tapping against the vanity. I can’t decide if it’s nerves or anticipation, but my pulse flutters like I’m seventeen again.

Standing before the mirror, I smooth my hands over the soft fabric of my dress—a deep royal blue wrap style that cinches at the waist and flows effortlessly with every step. The color makes my eyes pop; the fabric catching the light just enough to feel elegant but unpretentious. The V-neckline is simple yet refined, the long sleeves brushing lightly against my arms. It’s perfect for tonight.

I slip into nude ankle-strap heels, their soft click against the hardwood floor echoing in the stillness. I pause, adjusting the vintage silver heart-shaped pendant resting just below my collarbone. It glints softly, complementing the small silver earrings I chose. My hair falls in loose waves, framing my face naturally. Just enough makeup to feel special, but not so much that it hides me.

I catch my reflection, a flicker of vulnerability staring back. It’s strange, feeling this way again—like I’m about to go on my first actual date with Josh, even though we’ve lived through so much more than most couples could bear. I smooth my dress again, a nervous habit I thought I’d outgrown. Apparently not.

My fingers brush the pendant, and for a moment, I freeze.

Of course. He gave me this.

The memory drifts in, clear and vivid—the summer of 1989, just before Josh left again to rejoin the tour. I was only fourteen, standing barefoot in the grass behind his house when he handed me a tiny box, his expression more serious than usual. He didn’t say much—just fumbled with the clasp, his fingers brushing the back of my neck as he fastened the necklace. His hands trembled slightly, but when I looked up at him, his eyes were steady.

He didn’t need to say the words. I felt them.

I wore the necklace for years, even when the memories hurt. I wore it on special occasions, even on dates—like the early days with Adam, and later, with Nick. It was the one thing I couldn’t quite let go of, even when I told myself I had. I tucked it away during heartbreaks, convinced I was moving on. But somehow, it always found its way back to my neck.

A flutter rises in my chest, light and quick, and I press my hand against the pendant, as if to steady my racing heart. I never let him go. Not really. And maybe, deep down, I never wanted to.

I catch my reflection and smile, my heart warming at the memory. This isn’t just another night out—it’s a celebration. A moment that marks everything Josh and I have overcome to be here, together.

A second chance. And God, how rare is that?

Josh steps into the room, and I pause, taking him in. He’s dressed in a deep navy button-down that molds to his shoulders, the top button undone with that laid-back ease that’s so undeniably him. The color sharpens his eyes, his hair tousled just enough to look effortlessly charming. He pairs it with khaki jeans and dark brown boots—polished but lived-in.

His gaze sweeps over me, his eyes softening as they land on the pendant. He steps closer, his fingers brushing lightly over the delicate heart. “Is that…?” His voice trails off, a hint of wonder lacing his words.

I nod, my heart fluttering. “It is. You gave it to me the summer of ’89—right before you left for tour. I’ve always remembered that moment. I wore it for years… even when I was with Adam, and sometimes with Nick too. I didn’t know why I held onto it so tightly until tonight, and I’m glad I did.”

His eyes glisten with nostalgia, his lips curving into a tender smile. “I can’t believe you still have it. I honestly thought you might’ve forgotten all about it.”

“I never forgot, Josh,” I say softly, my fingers grazing the pendant. “Not for a second.”

His thumb grazes the heart once more before his hand drops to his side. He meets my gaze, his eyes shimmering with a tenderness that makes my chest ache. “It looks even more beautiful on you now than it did back then.”

A warmth spreads through me, tingling along my skin. I try to play it cool, but my pulse betrays me. Our eyes meet in the mirror, and he gives me a small, knowing smile. There’s a quiet excitement there, an unspoken acknowledgment that tonight is more than just dinner. It’s a beginning.

I take a breath, steadying myself. It’s happening. This is real. And for the first time in years, I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
